10 Home Remedies for Scarring
Scars are a natural result of your body’s healing process as it repairs a wound or other forms of damage to the skin. Unless the wound is minor, the majority of wounds result in some sort of scarring. There are many reasons for scarred tissue, but most often it’s the result of acne, a disease or illness, wounds and other skin conditions.
Scars are formed when the deep layer of the skin (the dermis) is damaged in some way, the body then creates new strands of collagen to help repair the damage. The new tissue results in a different texture compared to the surrounding skin, resulting in a scar.
There are different types of scars, depending on what had caused it and the type of skin you have. Here are the most common:
- Most scars are flat and are paler than the surrounding skin. People who have darker complexions, usually find that these scars are more visible than people with a lighter complexion
- Raised scars are called keloid scars. This is caused by the body producing too much collagen during the healing process
- Some scars will have a concave or a sunken appearance. This is caused when the underlying support structure under this skin is damaged in some way. These types of scars are common after surgeries and acne
- Some scars give the appearance of stretched skin, common during pregnancy and growth spurts. This type of scarring may also occur if there is tension on the skin during the healing process of a wound
In most cases, scars do not require medical attention. But if your wound hasn’t fully healed, or if you notice that your scar has started to swell, become red, itchy, or if there is some sort of discharge originating from the scar, it’s a good idea to see your doctor right away.
There are many treatments available for reducing scarring, from surgeries to laser treatments. But if you prefer natural remedies, there are some great options available to you. Here are 10 home remedies for scarring:
#1 – Aloe vera Aloe vera is an age-old home remedy for many skin issues, and it also can help treat scarring. Topical application of aloe vera has been shown to help heal wounds, control inflammation and decrease the amount of scar tissue resulting from a wound.
If you don’t have access to an aloe plant, get yourself some pure aloe vera get and apply it directly to the scar tissue. Rub it in gently using a circular motion. Leave it on for about 30 minutes and then rinse your skin. You can repeat this two or three times per day.
#2 – Helichrysum essential oil Helichrysum oil can help reduce scarring because it stops or slows down the formation of collagen type III and inhibits molecules that are responsible for reshaping of your skin while it heals. It promotes healing and helps develop tissues that do not form scars.
Mix around ten drops of helichrysum oil with two teaspoons of rose-hip oil and mix together in a bowl. Apply several drops of this mixture directly to your scar and rub it in using a circular motion. You can leave this on for a few hours or overnight, and it does not need to be washed off. You can repeat this two times per day.
#3 – Tea tree oil Tea tree oil is another old remedy that is useful for many ailments. It can help lessen the appearance of scars because, if mixed with aloe vera, it has been shown to reduce scarring as a result of certain causes.
Mix ten to twelve drops of tea tree oil with two or three tablespoons of pure aloe vera gel. You can also add a few drops of jojoba oil if you wish. Mix these oils in a bowl and apply a few drops to your scar. Leave it on overnight and wash off in the morning. You can also apply this mixture during the day, and leave it on for at least an hour before washing it off.
#4 – Eucalyptus and olive oil mix There is some research that shows that these two oils mixed together, can help speed up the healing of wounds by helping your body produce healthy tissues that help stop scarring.
Mix six drops of eucalyptus oil with four tablespoons of olive oil (make sure the olive oil is cold pressed), and massage this mixture into your scar. Leave it on for at least an hour and then wash it off with warm water.
#5 – Clary sage oil Clary sage oil is great for preventing scarring when your wound is in the process of healing. It’s antibacterial, so it helps keep your wound sterile, and it kills certain bacteria that can aggravate the healing process and make scarring worse.
If you want to get the best effect out of clary oil, it works best mixed with jojoba and tea tree oil. Mix one tablespoon of jojoba oil, two drops of tea tree oil and four drops of clary sage oil in a bowl. Massage some of this mixture into your scar and leave it on for at least one hour. Wash it off with some warm water and repeat this two times per day.
#6 – Frankincense oil Frankincense oil has been shown to help heal wounds and reduce the appearance of scars by reducing the level of collagen type III in scar tissue.
Mix a few drops of frankincense oil with a carrier oil such as coconut, and massage some of this mixture onto your scar. Leave it on for at least an hour and then rinse it off with some warm water. You can also leave it on overnight and wash it off in the morning.
#7 – Rose-hip seed oil his is considered to be one of the best oils for helping with skin issues out there. It’s great at improving the look of your skin, reducing the appearance of scars and wrinkles as well. It’s been shown to be an effective treatment for reducing the appearance of scarring caused by surgeries.
Apply a few drops of rose-hip oil to your scar and massage it in for a minute or two. This works best when left overnight.
#8 – Honey Honey is an age-old remedy for a myriad of ailments. It’s packed full of nutrients that help promote healing and prevent scarring. Honey is also antiseptic, so it can be applied before your wound is fully healed. This is a great idea if you want to help reduce scarring before your wound has even finished healing.
It’s a good idea to use organic non-pasteurized honey. All you have to do is apply some honey to your wound before going to bed. Wrap that area of your skin in a bandage and leave it on overnight. You should repeat this every day, before going to bed.
#9 – Coconut oil Coconut oil is a great oil for your skin, and can also be used as a moisturizer instead of creams. It’s also great at promoting healing, collagen development and reducing the chances of scar tissue as a result of a wound.
Massage some cold pressed coconut oil onto your scar, or your wound that is in the process of healing. Let it get soaked in by your skin and repeat this four to five times per day.
#10 – Apple cider vinegar Apple cider vinegar can help reduce the appearance of scarring because it contains acetic and lactic acids. These acids are often used in peels to help with acne scarring.
Mix two to three tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with double the amount of distilled water. Use a cotton ball to dab the mixture into your scarred tissue, two to three times per day.
