Potential causes for itchy ears:

  • Too much earwax build up
  • Infections
  • Swimmer’s ear – when an excess amount of moisture enters the ear canal and wears down your canal’s natural layer of defence
  • Skin allergies – itchy ears are often caused by an allergic reaction of some sort. This kind of allergy is often caused by some sort of personal care product such as shampoo, hairspray, etc.

When to see a doctor?

There can be many potential causes for itchy ears, so it’s always a good idea to get checked out by a doctor. But, if the itching doesn’t go away on its own in a couple of days, if you feel pain and discomfort in one or both ears, experience any sort of discharge from one or both ears, see your doctor as soon as possible.

It’s also important to note: never try to scratch the inside of your ear with any sort of object. Doing so may end up doing permanent damage to your inner ear.
