10 Home Remedies for Vertigo
Vertigo is often misunderstood as a condition, but it is rather a symptom that gives a person the sensation that they are off balance or have spells of dizziness. When experiencing vertigo, a common sensation feels as if the world is spinning around the person.
Vertigo in most cases is caused by a problem with the inner ear, and here are the most common causes of these problems:
- BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo) happens when microscopic particles of calcium dislodge from the usual location and collect inside the inner ear. The inner ear then sends communications to the brain about the movement of the body relative to gravity. Those calcium particles can interfere with that signal causing the symptoms of vertigo
- Vestibular neuritis is a problem with the inner ear that is usually the cause of an ear infection. As a result of this infection, inflammation of the inner ear can affect the nerves that are crucial for the body’s sense of balance
- Maniere’s disease is a disorder in the inner ear that is caused by a build-up of fluid to a changing pressure in the inner ear
- Head injury
- Neck injury
- Strong headaches or migraines
- Certain medications
The most common signs of vertigo to look out for are:
- Spinning sensations
- Sensation of your immediate environment tilting
- Swaying sensation
- A feeling of a lack of balance
- A feeling of being pulled on one direction
- Feeling nauseous
- Vomiting
- Twitching or jerking of the eyes
- Headaches
- Sweating
- Ringing in the ears, partial or full loss of hearing
When to seek medical attention:

It’s important to note, that most light cases of vertigo can be taken care of at home, using OTC medication or natural home remedies. It needs to be stressed though, that vertigo can be dangerous if you experience regular or strong symptoms. Make sure to use your judgment wisely regarding seeking medical attention. If you want to tackle the problem on your own, here are 10 home remedies for vertigo:
10 Home Remedies for Vertigo
#1 – Semont-Toupet manoeuvre This is a manoeuvre you can do with your body, that can help stop a bout of vertigo. Here’s what you have to do to perform the Semont-Toupet manoeuvre:
- Sit upright on a flat surface with a pillow behind your back, and your legs outstretched in front of you
- Lay down turning to your right side, and looking to the left and upwards
- Quickly sit back up and turn to your left, keep your head facing the left and now look down towards the ground
- Slowly return to the original position, looking forward and sitting up straight
#2 – Canalith manoeuvre This generally the most common manoeuvre used to stop vertigo. Here’s what you need to do to perform the Canalith manoeuvre:
- Sit upright on a flat surface with a pillow behind you and with your legs outstretched in front of you
- Turn your head to the right, 45′
- With your head tilted to the 45′, quickly tilt your head back on the pillow and stay in this position for 30 seconds
- Slowly turn your head to the left 90′ without lifting your head or neck
- Turn your whole body completely to the left, so your whole body is on its left side
- Slowly return your body to the starting position
#3 – Brandt-Daroff exercise: This is a simple exercise most people can do unassisted. It’s important to note that you shouldn’t perform this exercise unless you’re in a safe place and won’t be operating a motor vehicle for at least an hour. This is vital because this exercise can provoke spells of dizziness for a short period of time afterwards.
- Sit on a flat surface with your lags dangling like they would if you were sitting on a stool
- Turn your head to the left as far as you can, then lay your head on your torso on your right side and hold this position for 30 seconds
- Sit up and turn your head back to the centre
- Repeat this exercise on the opposite side
#4 – Vitamin D If you experience vertigo, it might be down to a vitamin D deficiency in your diet. It’s also important to note that a deficiency in vitamin D can also make vertigo and its symptoms worse. It’s important to supplement vitamin D or/and eat foods rich in vitamin D. If you suspect that you might be deficient, it’s a good idea to get checked out by your doctor.
#5 -Avoid alcohol Alcohol doesn’t only make you dizzy by intoxication, alcohol can actually have a negative effect on the composition of the fluid of your inner ear, Alcohol also dehydrates your body and this can have a serious effect on your balance, even after you’ve sobered up. Cutting back or stopping the consumption of alcohol is strongly recommended if you suffer from vertigo.

#6 – Keep yourself well hydrated There are cases where vertigo is caused by dehydration. The best way to stay properly hydrated, is to drink the recommended amount of water intake for adults. The usual recommended amount is 8 tall glasses of water per day, and more if you work physically or are a physically active person.
#7 – Avoid tobacco There is plenty of evidence that smoking can aggravate, or even cause vertigo. Smoking also dehydrates your body, and keeping hydrated is very important if you want to help treat your vertigo.
#8 – Sleep Sleep is perhaps one of the most effective prophylactics, and a lack of it may be responsible for aggravating, or even causing vertigo. If you’re lacking the proper amount and/or quality of sleep, this may be the reason you’re experiencing vertigo.
#9 – Yoga Yoga is a great way of increasing balance. Practising yoga regularly is a great way of training your brain to compensate for the causes of vertigo, and there are also a few positions that can help stop a spell of vertigo. If you’re experiencing a bout, it’s recommended to try Child’s Pose or Corpse Pose when you start to feel symptoms.
#10 – Manage your levels of stress Some of the conditions that are responsible for vertigo, such as Meniere’s disease are often triggered by excess levels of stress. It’s important to do what you can to eliminate stress from your life. Some of the most effective ways of doing this are:
- Eliminating the stress factors in your life
- Meditation
- Mindfulness
- Aerobic exercise
- Avoiding alcohol, tobacco and mind-altering substances
Vertigo should be treated with the help of a doctor if your symptoms are strong and interfere with your daily life. If your symptoms seem manageable, it’s a good idea to try these home remedies and possibly eliminate the cause of your vertigo in a natural and pharmaceutical free way.
